Covid: How are European countries tackling the pandemic?

Europe's response to the coronavirus pandemic has been a complicated patchwork: lockdowns hastily imposed in spring were eased in summer and now tough restrictions are back.

France: Curfew to replace second national lockdown

On 15 December, France is planning to relax the national lockdown in place since late October. Yet a target of no more than 5,000 new cases daily has not been reached.

Cinemas, theatres and museums are set to reopen and families will be allowed to meet up for Christmas. There will be a nationwide curfew between 21:00 and 07:00, which will be lifted for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The new measures will stay in place until at least 20 January, and will only be relaxed further when daily cases drop below 5,000.

Non-essential shops reopened on 28 November, but restaurants, bars and clubs will remain shut until the new year - as will the nation's ski resorts. Creches and schools are open, but universities will remain shut until February 2021 at the earliest.

Germany: Partial lockdown continues

Germany's bars, restaurants and entertainment venues are closed until 10 January, but schools, creches, shops and hairdressers are open.

Only two households and a maximum of five people are allowed to gather socially, but this will be relaxed temporarily over the Christmas period. Between 23 December and 1 January up to 10 people can gather, and children under 14 are not included in the limit.

Large events have been cancelled and fans cannot attend sports fixtures, but church services are permitted.

Overnight leisure stays in hotels are banned and non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.

Greece: Text requests to leave home

Greece's lockdown will run through to 7 January and people must get permission to leave home by sending a text message to a government number, including the reason and their personal details.

A nationwide curfew runs between 21:00 and 05:00, and travel between regions is banned.

Shops are shut, as are nurseries and primary and secondary schools.

People coming to Greece from abroad must provide a negative coronavirus test result.
